Crew of 5 treated for minor injuries, airfield closed as perimeter established

Officials at Stanfield International Airport near Halifax activated their emergency operations centre early Wednesday morning after a 747 cargo jet went off the end of a runway.

The crew of five onboard were removed by fire crews and taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

"It's believed to have gone off the end of the runway upon landing," airport spokesperson Theresa Rath Spicer said in a phone interview.
Halifax Airport emergency services are available now and flights are starting to get their clearances for departures/arrivals. Rwy 05/23 open.

Rath Spicer said the accident happened at the end of Runway 32. It's expected the incident could cause delays. The airport tweeted that the airfield was closed until a perimeter around the site could be established, at which point another runway will be opened. The airport's website was reporting delays and cancellations for both arriving and departing flights Wednesday morning.
