The battle between Britain's two train manufacturing plants has resulted in Hitachi, of Co Durham, winning a £400 million order for 165 new carriages on Abellio's East Midlands Railway at the expense of the Derby-based Bombardier.
Winning the order was a must for both factories after they lost out on the £1.5 billion contract for the London Underground to Siemens, of Germany, which is building a new factory near Goole, East Yorkshire, to help to deliver the new Tube trains.
Bombardier has indicated that Derby could run out of work from 2021 without new orders. It said that it would be challenging Abellio to understand why it had not been chosen.
