At the same time it seems from above that this same mountains tend to jump into this lake. Around this very famous lake, in an unnamed village, the first historic novel of Italian literature is set: “I promessi sposi” (en. “The Betrothed”). This novel is set in Northern Italy in 1628, during the years of direct Spanish rule and deals with a variety of themes, from cowardy to heroism until love and insights into the meanderings of the human kind. The intriguing highlight of “I Promessi Sposi” is the beginning. Alessandro Manzoni describes the geographical setting of the novel as follows: “The branch of the Lake of Como, which turns towards the south between two unbroken chains of mountains, presenting to the eye of a succession of bays and gulfs, formed by their jutting and retiring ridges, suddenly contrats itself between a headland to the right and an extended sloping bank on the left, and assumes the flow and appearance of a river”. Oh, how many times have I read these lines in school? A stunning epiphany came to my mind this early morning, while admiring this spectacle of lights and clouds over the #lakecomo . How many things we learn in our life journey, and how many things we do never forget. The best of literature is for me one of those. 🇮🇹❤️ .
