Boeing Co. offered voluntary buyouts to eligible employees, in a bid to quickly shed costs and adjust its work force of 161,000 to a coronavirus crisis that's quickly undermined the outlook for aircraft sales.
"When the world emerges from the pandemic, the size of the commercial market and the types of products and services our customers want and need will likely be different," Chief Executive Officer David Calhoun said in a message to employees Thursday. "It's important we start adjusting to our new reality now."
The move will preserve much-needed cash at Boeing, which is facing a sharp contraction in demand along with its European archrival Airbus SE. Airline customers around the world have slashed schedules, with some parking their entire fleets as the coronavirus pandemic guts travel.

Last week, Spirit Aerosystems said it was suspending operations for 2 weeks over coronavirus concerns, but many employees were called back to work Monday and are wondering why.
"We congregated like it was church, you know, and right now, you're not supposed to go to church," said a Spirit employee, who did not want to be identified. " I was surprised to get a phone call to work on grounded 737 MAX jets," he said.

Saab say they have performed the first metal cut for the two-seater fighter aircraft Gripen F, marking an important milestone in the programme.
"Gripen F is under development for the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) and shares the same advanced design and features as Gripen E, but with seat, displays and controls for a second crew member. The coronavirus pandemic is going to be as consequential for defense and security as were the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the U.S. For the defense sector, there are multiple implications to ponder and possibly to begin to position for as these play out in 2021 and beyond.
Large contractors should fare relatively well in 2020, compared to other sectors. They will not see the demand destruction that is ripping through commercial aerospace and therefore are unlikely to experience financial duress. After a month of silence, the Islamic Republic Minister of Roads and Transport, Mohammad Eslami, said on Sunday that the coronavirus outbreak in Iran had stopped the procedure of decoding the black boxes of the Ukraine International Airlines (UIA) passenger plane downed on January 8 over Tehran.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps' (IRGC) missiles shot down the Boeing plane killing all 176 onboard. Victims of the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans, and three Britons.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany is in talks to provide Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) with billions of euros in state aid and could take a stake in the airline, which has grounded more than 90% of its fleet due to the coronavirus pandemic, people close to the matter said.
