Though labor unions have lost much of their leverage against giant corporations, they still retain political clout in Congress. This week, the Boeing unions clinched a big victory in their scramble to add protections for the thousands of their members being laid off.

The upshot: Boeing workers will be eligible for benefits for nearly twice as long as most other recently laid-off workers, under a program meant to protect workers hurt by foreign competition, not by virus-driven industry downturns.

Because of a union push, laid-off Boeing employees were this week ruled eligible for additional federally funded assistance under a program called Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) that offers extended unemployment benefits for up to two years while...

Australia's pivot towards an offensive-focused military is to counter Beijing's rising militarisation in the Indo-Pacific region. It is part of a grander move for nations to unite against the Chinese regime’s coercive actions, according to a defence expert.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on July 1 presented the new Strategic Update and Force Structure Plan, which included a record $270 billion (US$187 billion) investment into the Australian Defence Force (ADF) over the next ten years.

Morrison said Australia faced a world “that is poorer, that is more dangerous, and that is more disorderly."

Boeing will reportedly stop making 747 Jumbo Jets for good after it completes the last of the 16 aircraft currently on order now.

The final 747 is now expected to roll off the line in the next two years or so, after which time the type will have been in production for more than five decades.

The impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic has had across the air travel and aviation industries have only further depressed an already declining market for the iconic plane, which is lovingly nicknamed the "Queen of the Skies."

Bloomberg was first to report the impending closure of the 747 production line on July 2, 2020.

The U.S. Air Force is buying an unspecified number of General Electric F110-GE-129 jet engines to power at least some of its future F-15EX Eagle fighter jets.

The service says this is an "unusual and compelling urgency acquisition" and comes ahead of a formal competition to decide on the F-15EX's powerplant, with Pratt & Whitney expected to submit their F100-PW-229 engine as an alternative.

The Pentagon first announced the deal for the F110-GE-129s, which also "including installs and spares and modernized engine monitoring system computers," in its daily contracting notice on June 30, 2020.

Winning could be especially important for Pratt & Whitney, which is facing the prospect of losing other engine business with the Air Force in the coming years, including with respect to the service's B-52 bombers and its F-35A Joint Strike Fighters.

The award is valued at $101,345,500 and the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center expects to have all the engines and associated items and services delivered by...

The U.S. Air Force is using modified shipping containers to safely transport people with the coronavirus from one location to another.

The containers are designed to carry patients on stretchers or on foot, and are loaded into the back of heavy transport planes. A specially designed air filtration system ensures the virus does not escape the container to pose a danger to the air crew.

Once embarked, the NPC is then loaded onto a C-5 or C-17 transport and then flown to the destination.

It was long a rather surprising choice of imagery for Finland's Air Force Command - a swastika and pair of wings.

The symbol will always be intrinsically linked with Nazi Germany and its crimes, even though its roots go back many thousands of years.

But now it has been confirmed the Air Force Command has quietly stopped using this unit emblem.

The change was first observed by University of Helsinki academic Teivo Teivainen.

He had previously questioned whether the continued use of the symbol was helpful for the Finnish armed forces.

As tensions in the Pacific Theater continue to increase, the U.S. military is flexing its muscles and reminding its potential enemies that it can reach out over vast distances and put boots on the ground on an island within a very short amount of time.

Case in point, an emergency deployment readiness exercise that just saw paratroopers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division out of Alaska descend onto Guam via airdrop from C-17 Globemaster III transports.

The airborne assault mission covered nearly 5,000 miles on its inbound leg from Elmendorf Air Force Base outside of Anchorage to Andersen Air Force Base on the northern tip of the island of Guam.

The documents began arriving in China at 8:48 a.m. on a Saturday in April 2004.

There were close to 800 of them: PowerPoint presentations from customer meetings, an analysis of a recent sales loss, design details for an American communications network. Others were technical, including source code that represented some of the most sensitive information owned by Nortel Networks Corp., then one of the world's largest companies.

At its height in 2000, the telecom equipment manufacturer employed 90,000 people and had a market value of C$367 billion (about $250 billion at the time), accounting for more than 35% of Canada's benchmark stock market index, the TSE 300. Nortel's sprawling Ottawa research campus sat at the center of a promising tech ecosystem, surrounded by dozens of startups packed with its former employees.

The plane flew tests for two hours on Monday, four hours on Tuesday and finally an hour and 37 minutes on Wednesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing on Wednesday completed the required re-certification flight tests on the 737 MAX, taking the plane a step closer to FAA approval to return to service.

An extensive to-do list must be accomplished before the plane can receive clearance to fly passengers again, a milestone now expected no sooner than mid-September. (A couple of months after that, U.S. airlines can fly the MAX again)

If you wonder what Run-up Pad means it refers to this special section of a run-up area on an airport that can be heated up in cold temperatures to prevent an aircraft from slipping forward when power is applied to test the engines.
