    • FAA is concerned that Boeing continues to pursue a return-to-service schedule that is not realistic

Federal Aviation Administration chief Steve Dickson met with Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg at FAA headquarters in Washington on Thursday to tell him to pull back on public statements about an imminent return to service for the Boeing 737 MAX.

Meanwhile, American Airlines announced that with the MAX's return already slipping by at least another month, it's pushing the MAX out of its schedule until early April.

Boeing has repeatedly said it expects FAA clearance for the MAX to fly commercially again by year end. Mr. Dickson on Wednesday said publicly that the schedule for approving a return to service had slipped into 2020.

Mr. Dickson called for the meeting, also...

    December 15, 2019 - by Jason McDowell for flyingmag.com

The striking Horten HX-2 flying wing that was unveiled in Friedrichshafen, Germany, at AERO in April 2018 has completed its initial stages of flight-testing and continues to progress through ground vibration and flutter testing at Horten headquarters near Eisenach, Germany.

During the initial flight-tests, the HX-2 was flown at speeds up to 124 mph and has returned promising preliminary data.

When flown at the long-range cruise speed of 87 mph, the HX-2's 100-hp Rotax 912is engine demonstrated a fuel burn of 2.64 gallons per hour. With 64.4 gallons of fuel capacity, this translates into...

The Reg Flag Exercise Showed That The F-35 Stealth Fighter Is Even Better Than You Think

    December 15, 2019 - by Kris Osborn for nationalinterest.org

Air Force Col. Joshua Wood, 388th Operations Group Commander was part of the exercise.

"I've never seen anything like it before. My wingman was a brand new F-35A pilot, seven or eight flights out of training. He gets on the radio and tells an experienced, 3,000 hour pilot in a fourth-generation aircraft. 'Hey bud, you need to turn around. You're about to die, There's a threat off your nose,'" Wood explained in the service report

The Red Flag exercise, and annual live combat-like training event, drew from an unprecedented amount of advanced threat scenarios, representing "near peer" threats. Red Flag aggressors, according to the Air Force report, included "advanced integrated air-defense systems, an adversary Air Force, cyber-warfare and information operations."...

December 15, 2019 - by By Michael Laris, Ian Duncan and Lori Aratani

A Federal Aviation Administration analysis of the Boeing 737 MAX performed after a fatal crash last year predicted "as many as 15 future fatal crashes within the life of the fleet," Rep. Peter A. DeFazio said Wednesday at a hearing of the House Transportation Committee.

The forecast was based on the assumption that 99 out of 100 crews could handle the erroneous activation of an automated flight control feature on the plane, an assumption that DeFazio questioned.

DeFazio (D-Ore.), pressing FAA officials for answers at his committee's fifth hearing on the Boeing MAX, said the agency had "failed."

Two of the airliners crashed within five months, killing 346 people. The FAA "didn't provide the regulatory oversight necessary to ensure the safety of the flying public," DeFazio said...

Investigators look to piece together cause of Gabriola Island plane crash as one victim is identified

Friends have identified one of the victims of a deadly plane crash on Gabriola Island, B.C., as a kind, caring and gifted pilot.

Alex Bahlsen, who had relocated to Mill Bay, B.C., about a year ago, was born in Germany and and moved to Cayley, Alta., about 30 years ago, according to a friend.

"He was a kind, caring, very intelligent, adventurous and fun guy – very talented," said Rasmus Rydstrom-Poulsen, who is in touch with Mr. Bahlsen's family.

Investigators are still trying to piece together what caused a small aircraft to crash onto the island near Nanaimo on Tuesday evening. The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP confirmed there were multiple fatalities when the plane went down in a wooded residential area, creating a "significant" debris field.

Onex's friendly deal to buy WestJet Airlines is valued at $5 billion, including assumed debt

Onex completes $3.5-billion takeover of WestJet

    December 15, 2019 - by ERIC ATKINS for theglobeandmail.com

Onex completes $3.5-billion takeover of WestJet

Onex Corp.'s $3.5-billion takeover of Calgary's WestJet Airlines Ltd. is complete, the Toronto-based investment manager said on Wednesday.

The takeover cleared the final regulatory hurdle on Tuesday evening, with a ruling from the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) that said WestJet and its subsidiary airline Swoop Inc. would continue to meet Canadian ownership laws after the takeover.

The deal, jointly announced in May and approved by WestJet shareholders in July, takes private Canada's second-largest airline for $31 a share or $5-billion, including assumed debt.

The CTA said Onex must amend its bylaws to require any matters that affect the two airlines are voted on at board meetings where a majority of Canadian directors are present.

The agency's determination that WestJet and Swoop Inc. would remain Canadian is on the condition that Onex amends its bylaws to ensure that any matters pertaining to and affecting WestJet Airlines Ltd. and Swoop Inc. are voted on at board of directors' meetings where a majority of Canadian directors are present.

A Slow Death? The Royal Air Force Only Has 119 Fighters - How Could This Happen?

In 1989 the RAF possessed around 850 fighters

Click Like to Follow Fliegerfaust Facebook page to get the News ASAP / Share to share this post now.

    December 15, 2019 - by David Axe for nationalinterest.org

    • In 1989 the RAF possessed around 850 fighters

The Royal Air Force in mid-2019 operates just 119 fighters, the lowest number in its history.

The shrinking of the British fighter fleet has happened even faster than observers predicted just a few years ago. And it could be years before the force significantly grows again.

As of June 2019 the RAF has 102 Typhoons and 17 F-35B stealth fighters in seven front-line squadrons. The last squadron of 1980s-vintage Tornado fighter-bombers disbanded in February 2019.

The RAF's 119 fighters represent a 40-percent reduction compared to the air force's fleet in 2007. That year, the RAF possess a little more than 200 Tornados, Jaguars and Typhoons. In 1989 the RAF possessed around 850 fighters including Tornados, Jaguars, Phantoms, Harriers and Buccaneers

My name is Normand Hamel. After a 35 year career in aviation I retired in 2009 to better concentrate on my favourite activities: reading and writing. If you wonder what Run-up Pad means it refers to this special section of a run-up area on an airport that can be heated up in cold temperatures to prevent an aircraft from slipping forward when power is applied to test the engines. It also refers symbolically to the yellow pad I am using to write these articles for which I intend to bring our readers to contribution to test my ideas, like one would test an engine to make sure it works properly.
